14. Harley Quinn (Latinx Delegation) - Racial Draft Season 2
Harley Quinn’s new backstory -- as per Martin and Carlos -- is as follows:
Harleen Francia Quinzel was born to Nicolas Quinzel, the descendant of Jewish immigrants who fled to Mexico to escape the Nazis, and Susana Quinzel (née Reyna), a young woman who grew up with “Nick” in Jiquilpan. When they discovered Susana was pregnant with their first child, a daughter, they decided they owed it to her to give her a chance at a better life. They came to the United States in search of opportunity. What they found was Gotham.
Harleen was the oldest of their 4 children, and their only daughter, Susana, quickly found work housekeeping at the Falcone Hotel and Casino. Nick had a harder time finding gainful employment. With the bills piling up and mouths to feed, Nick found himself in the employ of the Falcone family’s less legitimate enterprises. Harleen had her own job, though unpaid, taking care of her brothers. Even so, Harleen excelled in school and found herself college bound on a Diaz scholarship to Gotham State University. Harleen was living the better life her parents had sought for her.
But as happens all too often, Gotham giveth, and Gotham taketh away.
Nick was arrested in a college basketball point shaving scandal at Gotham State. As a result, Harleen was barred from competing in gymnastics at GSU. Nick was murdered in prison when rumors arose that he might have turned state’s evidence against the Falcone family. Susana and Harleen’s three brothers were deported back to Mexico, but as a Diaz scholar, and because of the strings her benefactors at the Diaz Foundation were able to pull, Harleen was allowed to stay.
Harleen made good, excelling at school and becoming a psychiatrist. Perhaps it was because of her father’s line of work and the ultimate cause of his death, but Harleen found herself drawn to the criminal mind. When the opportunity arose, and even though it didn’t pay as well as opportunities in Metropolis or Central City, Harleen jumped at the chance to work at Arkham. It was there that she met someone who would change her life forever, a John Doe sociopath with a violent streak and a flair for the dramatic. With his refusal to divulge his real name and her refusal to indulge him by calling him by the moniker for which he was infamous, a compromise was met at the title of “Mr. J.”
Sociopaths are adept at 2 things: mimicking emotion and identifying and exploiting the weaknesses of other people. Harleen, alone in the world and more vulnerable than she realized, fell for Mr. J hook, line, and sinker. To her, they were a modern-day Bonnie & Clyde. To him, she was a ticket out of Arkham.
After making their way to Ace Chemicals, evading both Gotham PD and the Batman, Joker threw Harleen into a vat of chemicals in an attempted murder. What crawled out of the toxic stew was Harley Quinn -- part murderous psychopath, part promising psychiatrist, part anti-hero here to seek revenge on the underworld who took her family from her.
You do not want to get on her bad side. She may be a petite blonde with porcelain skin, but never, ever tell her she doesn’t look Mexican. You won’t like the results.
The Latinx delegation has also provided a fancast. Sara Paxton. Because who better to play a fair skin, blonde, Mexican-American woman with Jewish ancestry than a fair skin, blonde, Mexican-American woman with Jewish ancestry.
